CO2 Australia only plants on land eligible under Article 3.3 of the Kyoto Protocol, meaning that the land that was clear of a forest some time on, or before 31 December 1989. This is also referred to as Kyoto Consistent land.

Planting Mallee trees is a labour and capital intensive process; as such we typically only consider parcels of plantable land greater than 50 hectares. However, if we are planting nearby, or if some of your neighbours would like trees on their property too, then we will happily consider smaller land parcels.

There are over 400 different species of Mallee trees in Australia. The species we plant:

  • Are extremely long lived.
  • Withstand extreme climatic conditions.
  • Are resistant to fire due to their capacity to resprout from a large underground stem (called a lignotuber).
  • Can achieve relatively high biomass growth rates in relatively low rainfall environments.
  • Are resistant to insects, browsing animals and disease .

If you happen to know a little more about your soil we'd like to know about it too. Ideally we are looking for loam or sand soil types, or even some light sandy clay types. We look for salinity levels below 2,000 microSiemens/cm. We also look for deep soil with a depths of 2 metres or more to rock, or other root impeding layer. If you are unsure about the soil characteristics or salinity levels on your property, we would be happy to come and test it for you.

If all the boxes are ticked, we would be seeking to purchase a Forestry Right from you. The Forestry Right has three main features:

  1. You still retain title and ownership of the land.
  2. You or the properties future owners can not remove or harvest the trees for the duration of the Forestry Right Term (usually in excess of 100 years).
  3. All the benefits of the carbon stored in the trees (the Carbon Rights) are owned by CO2 Australia, or a client of CO2 Australia. At the end of the agreed term, the Forestry Right expires and you are free to use the land as you (or future generations) please.

Although the Forestry Rights on the land are transferred to the new owner when you sell your property, it doesn't require any additional difficult steps in the sale process.
