Forest Carbon Sinks

Well designed reforestation projects are eligible to generate carbon credits under both voluntary and mandatory schemes operating within Australia. Reforestation projects are one mechanism by which permits can be created into the Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme, outside of the government permit allocation process.

As trees grow, they absorb carbon dioxide from the air and store carbon within their leaves, stem, wood, bark and roots. Through decades of scientific research, this carbon can be accounted and, provided eligibility requirements are met, the sequestered carbon can be converted to an equivalent amount of carbon credits.

Importantly, carbon credits generated via a reforestation project are based on removals of greenhouse gases from the atmosphere. Government issued permits, on the other hand, are simply made available free of charge, or through an open-market auction process, and they do not represent an actual removal of greenhouse gases.

CO2 Australia, by providing reforestation projects that deliver carbon credits over the long-term at a low fixed price, offers liable companies a cost-effective option for managing their exposure to higher carbon prices into the future.
