Climate change is an issue that won’t go away. It is a science; climate change is not a matter of belief, but evidence. Try disbelieving gravity – you’ll fall back to earth quickly.
Some have said that climate change has now led to the downfall of four Australian political leaders: John Howard, Brendon Nelson, Malcolm Turnbull and now Kevin Rudd.
There is a common thread; none of these leaders has been able to deliver an emissions trading scheme. They come from both major political parties. That’s because climate change is not fundamentally about left vs right politics.
When Australian politicians see the issue of climate change in the old terms – they bomb out because they overlook the strength of the science.
Since climate change is a matter of science rather than belief, it requires a response: logical and robust.
An emissions trading scheme is the best and most comprehensive way of putting a price on carbon and provides the framework on which to build for the future.
Politicians from across the spectrum will continue to be bedeviled by this issue, until they act to pass a broad emissions trading scheme.
