We have a responsibility to consumers to ‘get it’
There is a lot of information about climate change that is complex but it can be put into accessible form so people can understand it in their own language. We need to change the situation and make climate change so simple that the easy way out won’t be taking the sceptical viewpoint. I’ve always tried to put things in a way people who aren’t scientists can understand, and that’s most people! There is too much pressure on consumers to make sense of things they shouldn’t really be expected to understand. The environmental impact of products and services should be transparent and additional green actions should be easy for the consumer to “get”. But, people need to “get” that we are dealing with a long-term course of action. Whilst a quick, simple approach is desirable it is not really possible. Putting society on a carbon budget is a transformational change, something that has to be accepted over time as a part of society. Then it will become a norm.
